Mary, I'm far from convinced that print books are on the way out. So far, I've not ever bought a paper copy based on reading an ebook -- but I'm sure it'll happen! And when it comes to giving gifts, a wrapped-up print book does still seem much nicer than an Amazon gift voucher.

Steve, I really like your idea here. I think this was the sort of thing Jim was getting at during the debate, where he talked about the fact that self-publishers can repurpose their content -- rather than just publishing it once, in one form.

Great point -- this debate transcends the medium! BlogWorld (now renaming to New Media Expo) had a Web TV track too, but I didn't go to any of those sessions (maybe next time...!)

Thanks LaVonne! Great link ... I'm not sure I can easily work it into the book at this stage (and their model is a bit different from the process I'm recommending) -- but thanks for letting me know about it. :-)

Thanks, Shaquandra! And I probably lean towards Jim's side more than Scott's ... but I can definitely see the benefits of working with a traditional publisher too.

Mary,
I agree with you that traditional publishing may not phase out, at least any time soon.
Your statement about buying an e-book and then buying a hard copy brings up another possibility for non-fiction books in particular.

If the book can be broken down into parts, perhaps each chapter standing on its own, you could do a combination approach. Individual topics could be published as e-books, referencing back to the complete collection in a hard copy version. The e-book could state that it is an excerpt from the full version book.

I've seen this done and it gives the advantages of both worlds.
