Seth, I find the same thing with creative activities -- I reckon that "thinking creatively" is pretty much a habit, and our brains can get better at it! And as you say, consistency itself is a habit (maybe a meta-habit, if such a thing exists...?!)

Miche, thanks for the comment! I need to do some more thinking about how flow and inspiration connect with being consistent -- I suppose this ties in with Seth's comment; allowing regular time to be creative actually makes it easier to get into that flow state.

Hi Ali! I really enjoyed this subject. I think consistency is often more challenging for "creative types", where "flow" and bursts of inspiration come at various times. When you work on something and the creative juices are going, sometimes you don't want to quit. Often, though, after such a time, other things have been neglected and consistency has taken a back seat... things get a little out of order in other areas of life.

Your other point on the scheduling time makes a lot sense, and I like how you've broken things down into "physical goals" and non-pyshical ones.

For me, I try to take some time everyday to keep up with being consistent with the things that are important to me... even if I don't do them 100%, I try to do something. But when I fall off for a day or two, I pick back up. I used to see that as "failure", but as I've gotten older I've adopted more of a "progress, not perfection" mindset, and that really helps!

Thanks a bunch for sharing this.

Cheers,
Miche :)

Hey Ali, great post. It took me several years to arrive at this same conclusion. Consistency and momentum almost always give better results than sporadic bursts, especially for skill-based activities like learning musical instruments, writing, or speaking foreign languages.

I would say that in my experience, consistency is one of the keys to achieving creative goals. When I make time to do some creative activity on a regular basis, the flashes of inspiration come more often, even if I only have a short amount of time. Just having that time is like telling my brain 'okay, go run amok, it's play time.'

Consistency, I think, is a habit. If you can develop this habit in one area of life, it's easy to apply it to other areas.

Is that the same as the story of the turtle and the rabbit? Oh, I see that it is. Good thing you posted that link! ;)

Seriously, good article. I wish I had a butt-kicking partner, and I don't mean that in a kinky way.

I hate it when I sit down to write and then get stuck not knowing how to say something. I always have something to say, but how to say it is the problem. That is one way that consistency gets thrown off track even when I am trying to be consistent.

I agree with this 100%. Consistency is key. That's why you see so many New Year's resolutions fail...or even any goal for that matter. People go into it 110% and then just end up quitting. Take up exercising, for example. Someone will go from doing nothing to going too the gym every single day, but that will only last for a bit because you get burnt out. Instead, start slow and be consistent.

Good tips here!
